The Amazon rainforest scarcely needs an introduction. It is the world’s largest rainforest and spans nine countries in total, covering 40% of South America. The Amazon represents over half of the planet’s remaining rainforests and is home to an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species. In fact, the Amazon is home to a tenth of all known species on Earth. However, this vast wilderness is under relentless threat from large-scale farming and ranching, development, logging, mining and climate change. With the majority (60%) of the Amazon within Brazil, the country shoulders huge responsibility. Between 2000 and 2012, the rate of deforestation in Brazil slowed by 75%. However, data from 2017-2018 suggest there has been a 13.7% increase on the previous year with the biggest area of forest cleared since 2008. The fear is that this could continue if the policies of new Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, see fruition.
Harapan is a beautiful tropical stretch in the province of Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. It’s one of the biodiversity hot-spots of the world. It’s also home to many of the world’s threatened wildlife species: the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Asian Elephant, Malayan Sun Bear, and Clouded Leopard. Sundarbans Researve Forest: The Sundarbans Researve Forest is within the Bangladesh area and covers 40 percent of India. The entire land area covered by the forest is 10,000 km2. It is one of the natural mysteries of the word because of its location in the Padma, Brahmaputra, and Meghna river basins. Mangrove trees dominate the forest and it also serves as a habitat to the Bengal tiger. Monteverade Forest: Located in Costa Rica, the forest is named after Monteverade and covers an area of more than 10,500 hectares. Tropical green vegetation covers most of the area with nearly 2,500 plant species, 120 amphibian and reptilian species, thousands of insects, 400 varieties of birds, and 100 different mammals. The forest also has natural rivers, medicinal herbs, streams, and waterfalls and because of these natural resources it’s always referred to as “the virgin forest.”
The island was created during the Triassic period as a result of volcanic activity, so any wildlife on the island had to swim, fly, or float here. As a result, the only mammal native to Puerto Rico is the bat. In El Yunque you may also see rats and mongoose, the rats brought here on ships as an inherent part of sailing, and the small Indian mongoose imported in 1877 in an attempt to control those very rats in the sugar cane fields. As technology advanced I saw in 2013 an opportunity to document, in a scientific way, every detail of this forest. Now over 10K images later, I believe I am only starting. Then Hurricane Maria came totally unexpected, and decimated the forest canopy. A new world arose here.
