Even with all those similarities, this is far more advanced and far more compact. R29 is one of the shortest Crossbow ever made. The width is 10.5 inches when the axle uncocked and 6 inches when cocked. Bowtech is backing off the speed this year to give you smoother shooting and super-easy bow tuning via its new Deadlock Cam System, which allows you to move the cams left to right on the axle to eliminate cam lean and torque for perfect arrow flight. And all you have to do is turn a set screw. I always expect shooting a Bowtech to be enjoyable, but the Revolt surprised even me; the draw cycle was super-smooth, which I guess should be no shocker with a slower IBO than the company has produced lately. I love the Deadlock Cam and the tuning power it gives shooters without a bow press, and the new Clutch grip is comfortable. While not the speedster of its predecessors, the Revolt is a great-shooting bow that most hunters will really like.
Hoyt deviated a bit from the standard “here’s a new flagship bow” model by unveiling six bow models arranged in three categories: Alpha, Ultra, and Turbo. The Alpha line is directed at whitetail hunters and features short, nimble versions of two new models: the carbon Redwrx RX-4 Alpha and the aluminum Axius Alpha. The Ultra line was built with Western hunters in mind and features the RX-4 and Axius in Ultra configurations with longer axle-to-axle lengths and brace heights. The Turbo models, as one would expect, are speed setups. The RX-4 Turbo and the aluminum Helix Turbo (the Axius is not available in a Turbo setup) have advertised speeds of 350 fps. The only difference between Hoyt’s two flagship bows is easy to spot: It’s the carbon, silly. The carbon for the RX-4 does cost you, though — and it’s at a $500 difference. It weights in just under 8 pounds and has an anti-dry fire device and 3 inches of adjustment in the stock. Excalibur continues its tradition of crafting crossbows that feature traditional-style recurve limbs and the Assassin 400 TD is the company’s latest addition to its Micro platform. Its overall length ranges from 30 to 33 inches (depending on stock adjustment), making this a compact system.
